Mexican cuisine is one of the best in the world, at least in my opinion.
And it’s one of the best street food.
We know many Mexican dishes, also imported into our restaurants, but it’s also worth tasting some unknown typical dishes.
Let’s see some specialties:
Tortas – stuffed sandwiches with a dressing very similar to that used for tacos.
Tamales – prepared with a corn paste mixed with lard, stuffed with meat or vegetables, wrapped in corn or banana leaves and steamed.
Gorditas – a sort of pie made with thick corn tortillas and generally filled with meat and cheese, but also with other ingredients of your choice. They can be fried or cooked in the comal, a traditional Mexican plate.
Cochinita pibil – typical from Yucatan. Pork, marinated in a citrus juice, jalapenos and annatto, is cooked wrapped in banana leaves and served with rice, beans and onions.
Marquesitas – they are a kind of crepes, made by crunchy pasta. They can be served sweet or seasoned with cheese.
Mexico is also home to some world-famous drinks and cocktails such as tequila or margarita. But besides these, there are other drinks that are worth trying:
Aguas de sabores – sweet non-alcoholic drinks flavored with different fruits and flavors.
Pozol – drink obtained from a mass of cooked and fermented corn, often sold by street vendors.
Michelada – alcoholic beer-based drink with spices, lime, chilli pepper, tomato sauce, mixed and served in a glass covered with salt.
Mezcal – distillate obtained from the agave plant and typical of the state of Oaxaca, it can reach an alcohol content of up to 50%. The cream variant has a lower alcohol content (20%), try the one flavored with maracuya.
